Center Market Fun Day!

THURSDAYS: Kids Fun Day at Centre Market 11 AM to 12 PM

The Centre Market in partnership with the Ohio County Library present Kids Fun Day at Centre Market. Enjoy a story, hands on activity and puzzles. Kids from 3 to 7 are welcome. This event is free and open to the public. Parent or gaurdian must stay for the entire program. For more information call Paula at 304-234-3878.

Call me a health nut, but I don't care! I am studying Nutrition and hope to become a Nutrition Specialist. In the mean time, I'd like to share a few good bits of info that are good to know for moms/grandma's with 2-6 year old children.

NEW! BE AWARE OF ADDITIVES IN CHILDREN'S FOODS! What I'm specifically talking about is the color additives, such as RED 40, Blue 4, etc. you get my picture. If there is a color in your child's food (like there is in some juices, cereals and candy), avoid it. These additives have been linked to so many child disorders, such as ADHD and other behavior issues. Other alternatives: cheerios instead of fruit loops, raisins instead of fruit snacks, 100% juice instead of fruit drink, etc.

Yogurt:

Most children love yogurt! Yogurt is a great snack or good with a meal. It is good for the proper functioning of their digestive system! Yay!

While there are plenty of yogurt varieties on the market, watch for the sugar content. Many of the commercial yogurts with the cartoon characters on them are LOADED with sugar. Along with this, many flavored yogurt is also high in sugar. (I know of one pack that has 27 grams of sugar in just one 6 oz container!)

Check the labels and read the ingredients. If you choose a fruit kind, make sure it has REAL fruit in it (this will be a little higher in natural sugar).

Other options are plain yogurt! You can add anything you want, such as a little honey or cinnamon!

Vanilla yogurt is not so bad either!

Sugar in Juices:

When purchasing juices for your little ones, be aware of ADDED sugar. Many of you might know this already, but there are some out there who do not. CHECK THE INGREDIENTS and if the word "sugar" is listed, then there is sugar added. You always want 100% juice with NO added sugar. There are a few brands out there. One brand is Juicy Juice. It will say "No added sugar." There are a few others too. I will speak highly of Earth's Best brand. This is an organic brand. You can find these brands at Toys R Us, WalMart, Target, St. C Kroger, and Mt. DeChantal Kroger.
